On an annual clown hunt, a group of hunters have a good time while killing them off. But a new breed of clowns are becoming more and more common. These albino clowns are not like regular sad or happy clowns. They're much more angry and will be giving these hunters a real battle.
Replace any animal that is annually hunted with clowns and you have this movie, "Clown Hunt". You should probably also add some political things such as race and sexuality as well, for an even more accurate comparison. As you can imagine from that, the movie isn't very good. It might sound like a funny idea if you're doing your first student film, and it's made by a group of between 4 people. But this film is aiming too high for it to even become funny.
It's set in Texas, out in the wild. A group of hunters are setting up camp so that they can hunt clowns, drink beer and be men. The first two weeks is the season to hunt happy clowns, and after that is the time for sad clowns. Then there is the albino clown, a rare breed of clowns that are worth more, but are also more dangerous to hunt.
It's fucking ridiculous. I can see how this idea would be really funny if you haven't slept for 24 hours and you're hanging out with your closest friends. But to make it into a feature, and then release it upon the world, that's just a bad idea. Although the movie does go great lengths to throw in some politics/satire by involving issues we're facing a lot in this day and age - at times that's all there is. Yet it doesn't save it from being horrible. The only joke I found amusing (and that might've been amusing because the rest was so bad) was that the clowns wanted to be called "comical americans". Other than that, the jokes will be of gay nature among the hunters, bad puns, farts, clowns pooping candy, and various other mature comedy like it!
Frankly, I knew this was gonna be bad from looking at the cover. But I always try to keep an open mind, and I went into this with a mind as open as possible. It was just a bad movie. It's something that would amuse kids. Personally, the closest word to use for the feelings I got from watching this movie is "facepalming". It's not just that the comedy is bad (and idea is even worse), but the execution of things. The sound editing and the songs kept annoying me through-out, the acting was over-the-top stupid in ways you'd only get from seeing a group of immature adults think they're funny, and it's way longer than needed. Even though it tries to evolve, it still only goes from one poor joke to another.
Do you want to watch "Clown Hunt" to draw parallels to protesting, poaching, politics and questions of race, gender and sexuality, then... just don't. It's not a clever study, rather just a point and copy, but with clowns. There are things in the film that could've worked, and that should've worked, but it was simply made by the wrong people. It's a ridiculous and bad comedy where the only real joke is "look, they are clowns but they are doing things animals do! Hilarious!" (replace "animal" with anything else that could be hunted or hated).
I definitely think that this could've been sort of funny had it been a 15 minute short made by 16 year olds in school. Instead it's embarrassing to watch, and I'm not sure why they thought it was a good idea to throw in any shitty little joke they could think of involving clowns or gays. It's not even offensive jokes that you'd find in a movie by Troma (if they were, they failed). Simply just jokes/lines/puns that would make you want to slap a person for uttering them.
If I have to say one good thing about this steaming pile of candy, it's that it seems like they actually studied clowns.
