After a celebrity death that shocked the country, a guy who works at the morgue where her, Anna Fritz's, body rests brings two of his friends there when they're out partying. The fascination of seeing this famous person laying on a table in front of them turns into a lust. They believe there can't be any harm to sleep with the dead...
Spain has made quite a few unsettling horror movies that seem to be just in the right style for the American audience to eat it up. Movies like "[Rec]", "Tesis", or pretty much the entire body of work by del Toro. That said, there are also some underground movies that have succeeded in disturbing and fascinating its audience, and one that comes to mind when reviewing "The Corpse of Anna Fritz" is Nacho Cerdà's "Aftermath", possibly the most well-crafted and artistic necrophile movie ever made, yet somehow extremely disturbing. "The Corpse of Anna Fritz" feels like it took a lesson or two from "Aftermath", dipped a finger in "Deadgirl", then crashed it into a group of partying jocks.
I'm not saying that the result of "The Corpse of Anna Fritz" is a disaster, but it's a movie that starts weird and somewhat disturbing in that three friends decide to have sex with the famous celebrity Anna Fritz - after her death, while laying in the morgue where one of the friends work. You quickly realize that these three guys are very hard to care about, because they're simply equally annoying as they're awful. Yes, even the one that's supposedly the good guy of the three. The movie has a pretty intriguing start, as you know something will go wrong when they decide to fuck a corpse. And it does, but the movie is also slowly getting less and less interesting as time goes.
I haven't followed the marketing of this movie at all, so I can't guarantee that what I'm saying next won't be a spoiler. So consider this a SPOILER ALERT. But I personally wouldn't say it spoils it.
In the middle of having sex with her, she wakes up. This certainly makes it all the more exciting for a while, and I guess it's not too bad that you hate these people (it's obviously intended). The issue with it, for me, is that I don't even want to watch these people die. I don't want to watch them at all, because they are annoying. They do bad and unrealistic choices, they act as jocks on steroids, and there doesn't seem to be a natural flow from reasonable to crazy. While I do enjoy seeing Anna Fritz coming back to life and trying to get away from these people, to get a life she once lost back again, there's just too much bullshit going on that will anger the viewer in the wrong ways.
You can see some great ideas behind the writing of the movie, in how it questions morality and lust, the horrible things people can do (and continue to do just to protect themselves). Hell, you could even say that having a dead woman wake up and STILL be the one being hunted and not the other way around, is a nice change. That said, what they do with that often leaves a lot to be desired. It just feels like a long argument between unlikable characters, and a girl who doesn't want to be there.
If I were to judge the movie on its production values, it's certainly a good movie. But that's not really how it works in entertainment, is it? But is "The Corpse of Anna Fritz" a bad movie? Absolutely not. It is far from great, but it's certainly a movie that a lot of people could enjoy. It gets quite thrilling and intense every time Anna Fritz tries to escape, that's for sure. Ultimately, I think that for every thing it does right, it does something wrong, and it evens out as just a decent movie at best. It's "Aftermath", maybe a bit of "Deadgirl", but predictable and with jocks. There are movies you should seek out before seeing this one.
