Title: Gun Woman

Also known as:

Year: 2014

Genre: Action / Thriller / Exploitation

Language: English / Japanese

Runtime: 86 min

Director: Kurando Mitsutake

Writer: Kurando Mitsutake

A doctor seeks revenge after the death of the love of his life. To execute his plan, he trains a young woman to be his weapon. He implants a gun into her body and sends her to a place where his target spends time, for her to rip out the gun out of her body and kill the target.

Our thoughts:
I expected "Gun Woman" to be part of the annoying trend similar to "Tokyo Gore Police", but the movie is actually somewhere between the over-the-top Japanese action and independent Tarantino-wannabe chatter action. Whether this was a change for the better, I don't know - there are certainly both good and bad examples of the genres. What I do know, however, is that the people who made "Gun Woman" have little understanding of what makes a believable plot and cool characters. The movie tries to go for both, but fails miserably.

The story is about a twisted criminal who enjoys rape, necrophilia and eating the corpses. A doctor witnesses as the crazy man kills and rapes his wife in front of him, and he's out for justice. He trains a young junkie woman to be his assassin for a period of time, and when she is ready he implants a gun and full magazine into her body. This is done so that he can send her off to the place where the maniac gets his necrophile action on. He puts her in a dead-like state only for her to wake up at the right time and kill him off.

I mean, I knew this movie would be over-the-top, but somehow it still bothered me with every little detail it gave us. When the gun is implanted into her chest and stomach, there is no way in her that we wouldn't see the gun when it has been stitched shut. It just doesn't work. The movie isn't even over-the-top enough for me to accept such a fault. It's actually rarely that over-the-top, yet they do the dumbest things over and over again. Most things that are done in an attempt to establish how cool the movie is, is screwed up one way or another. The same goes for the characters, which are all extremely annoying and mostly poorly acted. I'm not sure if this movie was intended for teenagers, but those are the only age group I can imagine would find the characters somewhat cool.

The movie is constant in its blood and nudity. I am a fan of both bloody movies and movies with nudity, but this movie used every excuse it could to show the two. Okay, I know, I know - I always complain that movies try too hard and show nudity and gore together for the sake of it, but that's where filmmakers seem to go for some quick attention. "Gun Woman" is more about showing Asami naked than it is about good action, and it seems that the majority of ideas are based around what will please whatever fantasies the filmmaker and its audience might have.

I can't take "Gun Woman" seriously. I also can't enjoy it as a fun ride, because it's simply too annoying and dumb for that. The flaws are consistent and the story doesn't attract you one bit. Most scenes drag on for way too long and there's a horrible amount of needless explanation/information that I am pretty sure Mayumi (the Gun Woman) could have been given off screen. They fail to give us characters we want to watch, even from the start of the movie. If you want over-the-top craziness, then this movie doesn't give enough. If you want a fun action movie, then the dumbness of this one will distract you. If you want cool characters, then you're probably better off looking out the window. In the end, this movie is only made to show Asami naked and covered in blood, and it manages to do it in the least interesting ways. It's clumsy and stupid. I hated this movie.

Positive things:
- It's relatively well made.

Negative things:
- Horrible storytelling.
- Annoying characters.
- Stupid shit such as a part of a gun implanted under the skin of the chest, yet it doesn't show through.
- Too many scenes only to give information/train Asami.

Gore: 3/5
Nudity: 3.5/5
Story: 1.5/5
Effects: 2.5/5
Comedy: 2/5
