Filmmaker Julia Ostertag is in the United States to show her film "SexJunkie", but also took the time to make a documentary. What is the "American dream"? Even more importantly, what is HER American dream?
I am slowly getting a grip on who Julia Ostertag is as a filmmaker. Having seen three of her films so far, and have two left in my screener pile to go through (saving my most anticipated one for last, heh), I must say I am impressed. "NO American Dream" is a very simple documentary. It's pretty much a woman in a foreign country documententing her stay, but with a message. It's about Julia Ostertag documenting her trip to USA while she is there to show her film "SexJunkie". She wonders about the term "the American dream", and asks people she meets what their definition of the term is. Does it exist? Meanwhile she is on her own journey for the American dream, which in her case is to have sex with someone before she leaves. Every potential man she meets there is something wrong (shouldn't say "wrong", but more that she changes her mind or something about the person is revealed). "NO American Dream" is a nice little documentary that makes you think a bit, even if not too much. Is there an American dream or not? The truth seems to be that the American dream only means that you are free to do what you want, but sometimes things don't come easy.
With that said, I think it was fun to mix her interviews and discussions with people, with her own journey to find someone to have sex with. If she gets what she wants you'll have to watch it to find out! I'm gonna let this review be this short and end with following words; Julia Ostertag knows how to make simple things interesting, and her endless ventures into the world of sex continue to interest me.
