Radioactivity has been found around an isolated island that seems to have rid the place of animals. While the scientists that are sent there to investigate start to fuck around, something is lurking in the jungle. A sex beast that is hungry for blood and sex.
The duo Joe D'Amato and George Eastman returns after "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead" with yet another porn/horror mix. The notorious "Porno Holocaust". This is, of course, a very well-known title in the circles. It's a title I heard long before venturing into it, and it was one of the early ones I saw as well, but this time is the first that I sat down to really watch it and see what value I could find in it. And sadly, it's far less than in "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead" (but more than in their "Sesso nero"!).
If there's a message to be found in the story of this movie is beyond me since I think the radioactivity is just a way to set-up having a sex freak in the jungle. It's essentially a porno with some horror elements, so "horror-porn" or whatever is a stretch. We have scientists on an island and all they really do is fucking around, we have a sex freak and all it really does is keep hidden for the first 1h 20-30min, and we have the radioactivity that is just the reason for the season (so to speak). Do we care? No, D'Amato and Eastman, we don't care. This is what you guys do best (should I say "best" when it's not really very good?) when you go the porn route. Both of you deal slightly better with horror stories. So no, it's not a bother for me that "Porno Holocaust" had a bad story, but I think it's more the fact that it doesn't go into the horror aspect until very late in the movie that is the problem.
The sex scenes are mostly bad. It's hard to judge pornography, but it's just the terrible angles, lighting, the movement of the actors, and other far-from-flattering details in the scenes that make them poor. It's hardcore indeed, but at the same time I couldn't see myself wacking off to it due to all of these factors, even though it is indeed mostly just pornography (and I'm not picky!).
What did I enjoy about this movie then? Other than lesbian scenes (bad or not, a lesbian scene is a lesbian scene) I think the last part of the movie was entertaining, which is why it saddens me that it waited so long. Maybe if I wasn't a pervest and watched a cut version of it instead... Nah, what's the point? The sex freak looks ridiculous! It looks like his nose was smashed with a shovel, but not only that - it looks different from scene to scene as well! He has some horrible disfigurements but they're mostly horrible because of how cheap they are. I enjoy the little gore it has, especially when he smashed that one guys' face. Great little shot! There's also the scene after he had sex with (raped?) that woman and she's laying on the beach with blood smeared around her crotch. Proof that the movie could've been gross, violent horror if only it tried!
"Porno Holocaust" is essential viewing, especially if you haven't watched that much by Joe D'Amato. It blends pretty much what he is all about and you'll know after this one if you want to watch more of his stuff or not. At least I think so. It's not one of his best but it's probably his most notorious and that alone gives you a reason to check it out!
Personal request: If you know a lot about Joe D'Amato's more obscure work could you please mail me a few suggestions of some good ones?
