Brenda is the leader of a school gang, and while they are real bad girls, they are the good ones. One day Brenda's little sister Heather, both deaf and a mute, gets raped by a group of punks they had a run-in with a few days earlier. Trying to figure out who did this to her lovely sister, one of her friends ends up dead from the same gang. This is when Brenda seeks out revenge and plan on hunting them down one by one.
Consider me blown away as I was expecting just another cheap exploitation ride with boobs and violence just for the kick. What I got instead was a rape/revenge story told with a good dose of punch and equally much emotion. This is a movie that I really got into and just couldn't wait for the punks to get theirs handed to them in a violent matter. Standing tall along with some of the undying classics such as "I Spit On Your Grave", "Thriller: A Cruel Picture" and "House on the Edge of the Park", "Savage Streets" is definitely one of the tops. Why I waited until I was literally handed a free copy to review to watch this I don't know, but maybe the first sentence in this section explains it. It could just as easily just have been another cheap exploitation film not worth caring about.
Linda Blair plays the sexy Brenda, the leader of a group of girls. Linnea Quigley plays her handicapped sister, Heather, who hangs out with them. One night when they're out on the town they run into a group of punks in a Cabriolet that nearly run over Heather. Later the same night, Brenda and the gang decides to steal their car for laughs just to leave it covered in trash. This, of course, leads to some horrible consequences a few days after when the punks decide to rape her little sister, who ultimately ends up in the hospital. Brenda tries to find out who did this to Heather but not even the cops seem to try. Eventually Brenda finds out and just so happens to be, it's the same day that they end up throwing her pregnant and soon-to-be-married friend off of a bridge. Can you guess what happens next? Yes, Brenda dresses up in leather, arms herself with a crossbow, and go out on a punk hunt. It's a good plot really, because it works hard on getting us into the characters and it takes the time to establish who is who, and what is what. Many exploitation films forget to do this, and what happens then is that the viewer only ends up cheering on to the most vile scenes because they don't care for the characters and just see it as a kick. I really got into "Savage Streets" and was really feeling hate towards the bad guys (even though they were really, really stereotypical) and couldn't wait for the revenge to begin. It's not unpredictable movie by any means, you definitely know what's gonna go down, but that's to be expected. And even with this, it mixes school gang rivalry, sleaze/exploitation and rape/revenge good enough to stand out in the sub-genre.
And of course, it has plenty of nude ladies! Not only Linda Blair and Linnea Quigley, but an entire changing room. Really, this was a great scene, as it ends up in a cat-fight. Other than this, the movie has quite a couple of random boob-shots where someone ends up in a fight and get their top pulled off. Fantastic! What doesn't this movie have?
That would be gore. And I'm not really complaining, as this isn't the genre that usually delivers on this department. You can't get everything, can you? But it has some occasional wounds and whatnot that look good enough, but as you can expect from an 80's exploitation film, it's not gonna be perfect every time.
I'd say that this is probably the best 80's movie I've watched in a while and I am really happy that Studio S Entertainment ended up sending this to me, 'cause who knows when I would've bought it. I have had my eye on the OOP release quite a few times but I doubt I would've gotten it any time soon. What we have here is a fantastic exploitation story with foul-mouthed ladies, tits, a great revenge, and one hell of a punch. It has everything you need and want from these films.
