Frank is a filmmaking nerd who has an idea for a short, slightly disgusting, sketch with sex as a theme. When he tries to create his hopefully-viral video, he is helped by his equally sexually open friends and girlfriend of 10 years. They are all in small crisis of their own, and will have to lean against each other to get through to the other side.
This screener came with a link to an article by the director, which goes into depth about the creation of "Sexually Frank". It explains that a lot of this independent film is based on the real life of him and his friends, even to the detail of the problems he had while making a short film of similar style (although that one was about a VHS cock and a VCR vagina). A lot of characters are even played by the people they are based on! I think that this made me appreciate the movie even more, and reading it was very inspirational.
The movie focuses on sex in several different ways. It's about a circle of friends who all have some sort of issue or interest in sex. Frank is out main man. He's a sexually open filmmaker who is eager to have sex with his girlfriend of 10 years. His girlfriend works as a hospital so she's not always up for it. But rest assured: they are very much in love, and trust eachother to no end. They also have two friends: a gay man who is dumped by his boyfriend for shoving "their" cat off the bed, and finally a 24-year-old virgin desperate for the attention of a girl at work. Frank wants to make a weird little sketch for internet, where the entire thing centers around toe-fucking a girl's ass.
The plot of "Sexually Frank" isn't as important as the characters and their lives, really. While the main focus remains on Frank's video, there is so much more you care about here that it's often shoved to the side. And that's fine, that's not a negative thing - I think the movie is really warm and works on a realistic level, and it will be easy to like it. The characters are especially likable, even the ones that are "bad". The story of the virgin was my personal favorite, as it developed nicely into something really different, extremely sad but also hilarious. There is drama in here, some serious stuff at times, but it's threading lightly so it luckily comes off as an indie comedy over anything else.
This is one of those small movies that should be taking the viewers by storm in a similar way as "Clerks" did when it first came out. "Sexually Frank" deals with themes that will never grow old: sex and relationships. It's always gonna be funny to hear people talk about sexual stuff, and it's always gonna be sad when someone doesn't get what he wants. It's universal themes, and that's what can make an indie movie like this a success. Next to fairly recent titles like "Young People Fucking", "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy" and "Strictly Sexual", this one comes out as the winner. I don't know if it's because it's based on real stuff and played by the actual people, but this feels very real. Quirky, of course, but real. And that's what I loved about it - I could've watched an entire hour more and not be bored. It's just a sweet, warm and funny movie!
