A group of young yuppie-types are having a small get-together but when two of the yuppies stop at a music shop during a botched robbery, they end up bringing the thugs back to their place. What was supposed to be quite party of friends turns into a night of degradation and sick games.

Our thoughts:
"Everyone, I'd like to introduce you to Venus Flytrap, House on the Edge of the Park's ugly sister. Venus Flytrap, say hello to everyone."

Not to offend the fans of "Venus Flytrap" but that's essentially all the movie is: a cheap-o shot on video version of "House on the Edge of the Park". Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, especially since when you get down to exploitation cinema a majority of it is movies ripping off other movies. So I'm not going to crucify "Venus Flytrap" for it, I'll make due with making fun of it instead.

Oh and believe you me, the movie gives you plenty of material to work with to rip on it. Including the unbelievable homophobic laden dialogue that’s complimented with copious amounts of swearing, that borderlines on ridiculous, and some of the best in soap opera acting. A story that seems to believe that it is more clever than it really is, especially by having the name of the movie be "Venus Flytrap". Yes, T. Michael and Marvin Jones, I'm sure you really managed to surprise everyone with that little twist towards the end minus the fact that Ruggero Deodato beat you to it 7 years earlier. I guess I could give the story some credit because it's not bad and it unfolds in a respectable manner for what type of movie it is. Then again, is the execution of the movie the result of someone who knows what they are doing or is it because they had blue prints for the story's structure from another film?

Still, even with the movie being what it is I was still able to find some enjoyment in "Venus Flytrap" and hilarious at times even if it was all unintentional. Or was it intentional? Hell I don't know and I don't think Michael and Jones did either. Regardless there is humor to be found in the movie as well as a respectable sleaze factor with everything from rape to some hot tub necrophilia action, though like the movie itself, it's more amusing than anything else.

Yes it's a SOV knockoff. Yes everything about it is pretty bad. In the end though, I found "Venus Flytrap" to be one of the better SOV movies out there even with all of the things that are wrong with it. The bad moments are bad but the movie is able to remain in the so bad its good territory instead of heading into the it's so bad its painful area, which unfortunately is where a lot of these movies end up. It’s definitely a movie worth checking out if you are looking to get into the world of obscure shot on video titles or simply want to watch something to riff on.

Positive things:
- So bad its good...ish.
- "I love the Power Glove; it's so bad."
- There's an actual venus flytrap in the movie.
- Some good sleaze with nudity, rape, and necrophilia action.
Negative things:
- It's a SOV knockoff...What do you think?
- Steve Malis, you're no David Hess. Get the hell off my TV.
