CHRISTMAS GIFT RECOMMENDATIONS 2011
(Posted: 1 December 2011)

It's soon Christmas and everyone is going crazy over buying gifts to their loved ones. It can be a pain in the ass if you don't know what to get them. But if you have a friend, a lover, a mother or a brother who is of bad taste - who enjoys the obscure, the weird, the horrific - then we have the perfect list for you!

We have included some links where you can get the products but we take no responsibility how your transaction with this place or person is - we just want to point you in a direction. So shop at your own risk and don't blame us if they end up stealing your money! With that said, a lot of these things we have bought ourselves and have received.

CLOTHING

Thriller: A Cruel Picture t-shirt
There are a couple of Thriller: A Cruel Picture shirts out there, but none of them are as nice as the latest one from Fright-Rags. It only comes in red, but really, it's a wonderful red t-shirt that even someone like me (who usually covers his fat in black clothes) wears with pride. So if you know some like me, this t-shirt is worth getting them out of their comfort zones for. Help them sport the sexiest avenger to ever grace the screen!

Limited Edition Patrick t-shirt w/VHS packaging
Rotten Cotton and Fright-rags pretty much dominate the horror t-shirt world and for good reason - they make kick ass t-shirts. So I found it only fitting to recommend an item from the up-and-coming company It's Only A T-Shirt. They maybe new to the scene but they're coming out swinging with their first item - a limited edition shirt for the Aussie flick Patrick that comes in a VHS clamshell packaging. How fucking cool is that? You get a shirt and VHS case for decorations.

Cannibal! The Musical "Shpadoinkle" t-shirt
Who wouldn't want to own a t-shirt that contains the signature catch phrase from the box office smash, Cannibal! The Musical? Only communist and they don't celebrate Christmas, so fuck 'em. For everyone else, this multifunctional gift is perfect: it lets everyone know that you're shpadoinkle and also shows your support for one of the best musicals ever made. Your heart will be as warm as a baked potato when you see a person's face light up when they receive this shirt as a gift. I think you know exactly what I mean.

BOOKS

Bad Mags 2
Chances are that if you're here then you tend to enjoy the more esoteric things in life. Bad Mags 2 takes a look at magazines from the fringe - because there was a time when it was print that was corrupting our society as opposed to movies and games. And yes, normally you would recommend the first book in the series instead of the second. For a Christmas gift, however, the price tag for the second volume is much more reasonable then what the first book fetches since it's OOP.

Stephen King - On Writing
Whether you actually try to write a book, a movie or just want to do something creative, then this is a great book to get your inspiration pumped. It's a detailed memoir written by Stephen King himself and works as part autobiography and part educational. Stephen King writes it with such joy and with a nice dose of humor and it makes the book a very fun read, even if you don't plan to be creative afterwards.

Cinema Sewer Vol. 3
There are a lot of movie guide books out there but none quite like the Cinema Sewer books. Combining issues from the magazine series - trash aficionado Robin Bougie puts together a comprehensive guide to, as they put it: "History's Sickest and Sexiest Movies!" Combining the written word with wonderfully disturbed illustrations, Robin takes you on a ride that will leave you wet and dirty. The third volume was recently released and if you order it straight from Cinema Sewer's webstore, Bougie himself will throw in a personalized illustration for you.

Deathtripping: The Extreme Underground
Deathtripping is a very ambitious look into the film equivalent to punk. Of course I am talking about the Cinema of Transgression movement! 280+ pages, with small font, filled with facts and interviews with filmmakers such as Richard Kern, Nick Zedd, Tommy Turner and Lydia Lunch. An excellent gift to that one film nerd who always seems to hate everything. Obscure, dirty and crazy are just three words that sum up the movement.

Lunchmeat #6
Egon Spengler once said, "Print is dead." Well Josh Schafer and Ted Gilbert, along with a number of other contributors, look to prove that wrong with their latest installment in their badass retro zine, Lunchmeat. It's a great little gift for the cinephile in your life because you won't find a magazine that delves into the nostalgic world of VHS quite like Lunchmeat. There are lots of other little goodies available for purchase at the webstore but issue #6 of the zine is enough when you need to show a person just how much you love them. VHS is happiness, after all.

Matthew Stokoe - Cows
I'm not a huge reader myself but when I heard about Cows I knew I had to check it out, and this is some sick stuff. I can't speak for other books, but this is by far more over-the-top and fucked up than any movie I have ever watched. If you can think of something extreme, odds are that Matthew Stokoe tripled it in this book. Yes, it goes too far! So much that you can't take the book seriously at times, but at the end of the day it has a somewhat decent story once things kick in later on! If you want to completely shock someone who enjoys a nice, quiet read. Well, no need to look any further!

Satan Burger
The book that started it all for author Carlton Mellick III; while he may not be the most "shocking" or "offensive" author you'll read he will take you on a very strange journey into surreal fiction. Find out what happens in a world where God is bored with the human race, a giant vagina portal transports people to other planets, and Satan sets up a burger joint on Earth.

The Mammoth Book of New Erotic Photography
When I run into a writer's block or just find myself bored, I enjoy having a couple of books of art around because it stimulates your mind. The Mammoth Book of New Erotic Photography is bound to stimulate more than just your mind as it features some of the world's leading photographers, and I can guarantee that you won't find a single boring photograph in this book. Don't worry about feeling like a perv giving something like this to someone - once you've had a look through it you will want to keep it to yourself!

MOVIES / SHOWS

Chainsaw Sally Show Season 1
There isn't a man, woman, or child who wouldn't want Chainsaw Sally under their Christmas tree. Why, I bet even ol' Saint Nick is hopefully to find that under his tree. Not only do you get the sexy Chainsaw Sally and the complete first season of her show - but if you order this holiday season's exclusive "Silent Night-Holy Shit" special, you get a lot of bang for your buck. All orders are processed by Sally herself and Jimmyo so if you're extra nice you may get an item or two signed. Or you could request it. Which ever one comes first.

Szamanka - Uncut Premium Signature Edition
Mondo Vision's extraordinary releases of Andrzej Zulawski movies might be a bit pricey, but if you ever held one in your hand you would know why. They're gorgeous releases, and they are packed with extra material and are limited to 2000 copies. This very film comes with a soundtrack disc, a 48-page booklet and of course the "Digitally Restored High Definition Transfer Mastered For Progressive Scan (Approved by Director Andrzej Zulawski)".

Slime City - DVD signed by director Greg Lamberson
A signature movie in the low-budget and underground world. Director Greg Lamberson himself is selling these DVD's and at a steal of only seven bucks. Affordable and it comes signed by the filmmaker - A great gift for your favorite movie-nerd.

The Phantom Carriage
One of the most interesting Swedish movies was just recently released by the best distributor out there - Criterion! The movie itself has made an imprint on such directors as Stanley Kubrick and Ingmar Bergman, and their films even feature some scenes that you can tell originally came from this ("Here's Johnny" from The Shining comes to mind!). This is an excellent Christmas gift because the story reminds you of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, but much darker and unique. I don't think I need to tell you about the release. All you need to know is that Criterion released it - with two different scores!

The Basement: 5 Film 80's Retro Collection w/VHS
Whoever receives this gift will either love you or hate you. However, if I were a betting man then I would bet that they would love you. It's not secret the movies are bad and it takes a certain panache to enjoy them but it's the packaging that makes this a thing of beauty. It's a reasonably priced set that comes with five movies and comes in a nice big box bringing together the new and the old and really shines in a collection.

Seeking Wellness - 3-DVD SET
A movie that took me by surprise is Daniel Schneidkraut's Seeking Wellness. It's probably one of the best movies I have seen all year and he is a director worth supporting if there ever was one. The undertitle "Suffering Through Four Movements" speaks volumes of the movie - it's not just a shocking film, it's a sort of ritual. You can get the movie along with two of his other films (Matt's Story and Victory) for just $30! Seeking Wellness alone could be worth the price, if you ask me.

A Cadaver Christmas
Just because Halloween is over doesn't mean you can bring horror with your Holiday cheer. A Cadaver Christmas brings two of the most popular holidays together in one kickass piece of low-budget independent horror. One-liners? You got it! One of the best anti-heroes since Ash? You got it! Ridiculous situations like zombies being killed with school desks and Christmas trees? You got it! We haven't posted a review for this movie yet but it comes recommended - the perfect movie to start a holiday tradition with.

Maximum Shame
Carlos Atanes might be one of the oddest directors out there and his latest film Maximum Shame makes it clear. This is a must for those out there who want their movies to feel like they're high, like they have no idea what is going on, and if they want to witness something extremely original. There are few directors like Carlos Atanes and that's because the world would end in a second if everyone had his thoughts. Had someone given this to me on Christmas I wouldn't know what to say.

Ink - Deluxe Bundle
Ink is a beloved movie at Film Bizarro and for a good reason: it's a great movie and shows the true spirit of independent filmmaking. If you order the Deluxe Bundle that's only available from director Jamin Winans' himself you get your choice of a signed DVD or blu-ray along with a shirt and a poster. When you're looking for quality gifts that help you stretch your dollar, this bundle is a solid purchase.

Hitch-Hike
With the recent loss of David Hess it seemed appropriate to include one of his films on here. Plenty of people have died recently and while we would love to include all the greats I decided upon David Hess and his most excellent film Hitch-Hike because it's OOP from Blue underground. But you can still get it a fair price if you pick one up in time!

Apan
Here's a movie that has snuck under the radar in Sweden and I'm pretty sure the rest of the world as well. It's a mysterious drama about a man who wakes up bloody in his house. The most interesting thing about the movie is how it was made with the lead actor having no idea what the next scene to film would be. It gives his character a credibility that most movies lack, especially in this country of Vikings that I live in. No doubt one of the highlights of Swedish cinema in the past 10-15 years.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Garth Marenghi, horror writer, is probably the most unique horror writer you will ever stumble upon. The show presents itself as a lost classic TV show that was supposedly originally made in the 80's, but never aired on TV. Of course, being a fake 80's horror show most of the comedy comes out of the cheesiness, the bad acting and the fake interviews. The people behind this show are geniuses at work. Britain shows yet again that they are the best at TV comedy! Anyone should love this show.

Riget I & II
The bottom of every Nazi joke this year, Lars von Trier, has produced a lot of excellent movies. But one of his most excellent works is the TV show Riget. Even though it never got its third and final part there are few shows that pack as much in two short seasons. It's a quite brilliant blend of comedy, horror, surrealism, soap and experimentation that takes place in the biggest hospital in Denmark. Giving this to someone is really saying that you care about them - they'll never stop looking for ghosts in hospital elevators or long-legged freaks in hospital beds after seeing this show.

Alice Cooper - Welcome 2 My Nightmare
The only music gift recommendation this year is a sequel. Alice Cooper has finally came out with a follow-up to his 1975 release Welcome To My Nightmare, and fans of his older stuff will love this. It has that nice variety going from your typical rock to something much, much more.. Alice-like. If you ever wondered what happened to Steven from the first record then this will tell you. I think this is one of his most interesting albums in a couple of years. Personally I prefer the stuff he did before the Constrictor release back in the 80's and I know there are people who agree.

Zombie Driver
This extremely cheap indie zombie game is probably one of the most entertaining games I have played this year. I'm not a huge gamer or anything, but Zombie Driver kept me entertained through the entire story mode and then some. All you do is run over zombies, shoot zombies, and rescue people. That's all there is too it! I'm sure that this would be a great compliment gift to a horror nerd. With the low price of $9.95 you can still include plenty of other things!

Diabolik DVD Gift Certificate
People say gift certificates are impersonal but sometimes a gift certificate really is the best gift to give somebody. Especially a film geek since you can never tell what somebody likes and with Diabolik DVD's wide selection of everything from arthouse to z-grade trash, the gift certificate is a perfect present. Especially since sometimes people don't want to put the DVD for Re-Penetrator on their Christmas list - some might find it embarrassing.

Buy at DiabolikDVD.com!

Rifftrax Gift Certificate
Budgets are pretty tight this year for everyone and because the Mystery Science Theater 3000 box sets can become costly pretty quickly, a Rifftrax gift certificate is a great way to bring the joy of everyone's favorite riffers into their homes. The rifftrax themselves are cheap and chances are you already own the movies they riff on so sit down and have your whole viewing experience changed forever. I know I can't ever watch Predator again thanks to these guys.

Buy at Rifftrax.com!

Slingshot Screaming Monkey
Not exactly the same thing as the Woot Monkeys featured heavily in the Doug Loves Movies podcast but they operate the same and have the same screaming sound so it's just as good. I've bought a few of these myself and I can never hold onto them because anytime anyone sees them they automatically want it. Great fun for people of all ages and best of all you can shoot whoever you want with them and not have assault charges filed against you.
